As a freelance writer, Jack Naile was used to getting an occasional letter from one of his readers, but when one of those readers sent him a clipping from a magazine, it would not only change his life, but could alter the course of history as well. The clipping had a photo, taken in Nevada in 1903, of a street scene, including a story with a sign, “Jack Naile—General Merchandise.”

Intrigued, Jack phoned the Nevada town’s historian and asked for more information. When the historian sent him a photo of the 19th century Jack Naile, what had seemed like an interesting coincidence immediately became much more bizarre. The four people in the photo, dressed in the style of the time, were unmistakably Jack, his wife, their grown son and teenage daughter. Jack decided he would have to take a trip to that town to investigate further. And if he and his family were somehow going to travel back in time, he was going to be prepared—and be well-armed.

The quality of writing was fairly low -- possibly acceptable for a first book, if you're being really generous. I've run across a few authors whose first books were this bad, but later shaped up to be OK.

Imagine my surprise when I discover they've previously written some 60 books.

Cardboard characters. You had to look carefully to see who the viewpoint characters currently were, since they all seemed the same.

It's OK to let me know your politics, but please, don't keep bludgeoning me with them over and over. And over. Again.

Reading this was not a good investment of my time.

Stereotypical characters of both genders, and outright misogynistic in parts. I was incredulous all the way through that 1 or 2 women could have contributed to this book.
I found the pacing to be lurchy, and technologically the ePub was badly formatted with no breaks between scenes.
TR was a worthwhile character, the original premise was cool enough, and the desert setting was nicely evoked. Some battles were exciting. As others have said, it's strongest for the gun and tobacco fetish audiences.
And yes, nonetheless I did finish reading it. Partly it was stubbornness, but I was also hoping for a plot-heavy payoff. Nope.

I am a fan of Jerry Ahern, I own almost the entire Survivilist series, I think the Aherns made a good effort with this story. I enjoyed it and will probily reread it again. Good work.

Great plot line, somewhat tedious execution. Really enjoyed the gun scenes, they were written with the style of someone who knows what they are talking about. Even as a right-wing nut-job, I found some of the political material over the top.

Gun porn and political diatribe. And not very good diatribe. Overall quite disappointed. It was a good idea, but execution was painful. Won't be buying another one from them.

I thought it was OK, but I definitely got tired of the authors' fetishizing the smoking and guns.
