Sometimes paranoia is just a heightened state of awareness. Carrera's won his war, and inflicted a horrific revenge upon his enemies. But there are wars after wars. The Tauran Union is planning an attack. The criminals of neighboring states are already attacking, and threatening to embroil him in a war with the planet's premier power. His only living son is under fire among the windswept mountains of Pashtia. An enemy fleet is hunting his submarines. His organization has been infiltrated by spies. One of the two governments of his adopted country, Balboa, is trying to destroy everything he's built and reinstitute rule by a corrupt oligarchy. Worst of all, perhaps, he, himself, bearing a crushing burden of guilt, isn't quite the man he once was. Fortunately, the man he once was, was lucky enough to marry the right woman . . . . The Lotus Eaters is the direct sequel to A Desert Called Peace and Carnifex.

IT would have gotten 5 stars if not for the incessant drivel of the author's desire to live in a military junta. Or his desire for women and gays to be second and third class citizens who exist solely for his psycho sexual domination. Kratman's right wing preaching is even more annoying than John Ringo's conservative hypocrisy. They have a contract to weave in the right wing message of the day in their books. IT's such a damn shame that they write such great SF! I have no choice but to finance their tea party crap. Ah well.. It still is hugely funny to see every single one of their theories and ideas debunked and proven to be worthless as the months go by and their right wing theories crumble LOL. Next you'll hear how intergalactic health care for all is evil because earth corporations can't decide who will live and who will die anymore. LOL

Really enjoy this series so far. A bit heavy handed with political ideals, but subtle tends to get ignored by propnents of a one world government. Honestly if you have made it this far in the series, you are probably politically aligned with the author, and it has gotten more in depth with the story line. I was suprised to find I enjoyed it as much as the first two. Honestly didn't know where the plot could/would go after book 2 and was very impressed. Can't wait for 4, and the inevitable? clash with Old Earth.

An excellent (and unexpected) sequel. Avoids the trap of repeating old stories in a new setting. Looking forward to part 4.

Though there's a drug war in this book, it's main purpose is to set the stage and show the preparations for war with the TU while UEPF gets a competent commander and starts to dig itself out of its grave. I loved the setting things up part, but sadly, there isn't as much material discussing the case for timocracy as I'd like and thus, the four stars. Obviously, timocracy is discussed in some detail, but I'd hoped for far more. Anyways, this is a good book. I recommend you give it a read. It'll grow on you as it did on me.
