Conrad Stargard: The Radiant Warrior
by Leo Frankowski
Publisher: Baen Books

CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY—OR DIE!

One moment Conrad Schwartz was suffering from a severe hangover as he hiked through the mountains of present-day Poland, the next he was running for his life from an angry Teutonic knight. Things went downhill from there, and he finally had to face the disheartening fact he had somehow been stranded in 1231 A.D.

He would have been happier if he had known less history. But there was very bad news in his new future, so he set out to turn Medieval Poland into the most powerful country in the thirteenth century. It wouldn't be easy. He would be investigated by the Inquisition (he should have expected that), be knighted, round up vassals, build a city, survive armed combat with the Champion of the Teutonic Knights, invent the steam engine and cloth factories, establish universal education, and organize an army.

He needed that army most of all, because he knew that the Mongol hordes would attack in only ten years and destroy medieval Poland—and that would really mess up Conrad's life.

Three novels in the Locus best-selling series in one volume.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Leo Frankowski's popular Cross-Time Engineer series, the first three novels of which fill this volume, has gone through six novels to date, with frequent reprintings and translated editions in Italy, Spain, and Poland. In addition, he has written the novels A Boy and His Tank, The Fata Morgana and Conrad's Time Machine for Baen. In collaboration with Dave Grossman, he has also written The War With Earth, Kren of the Mitchegai, and The Two-Space War. Frankowski was nominated for the John W. Campbell award for best new writer. His occupations have ranged from scientist in an electro-optical research lab to chief engineer to company president. His work in chemical and optical instrumentation has earned him several patents. Currently a writer and consulting engineer, he lives in with his new Russian wife and teenage daughter in Tver, Russia. Very interesting plot line, yes the age limits on sex are different but are they really all that different from what it was in our own country in the not so different past.

Yes it is a good twist of time travel. And yes, that time period was brutal. Today the laws says it is not allowed, but most barely get a slap on the wrist as punishment. So, anyway, the book is more truthful than some want to think about. Well, I say to bad, think about it! It is only fiction, or is it? :)

One of my all time favorites. Re-buying the series in a format that I can now use on my eBook reader. My paper copies are showing the signs of past reading.

- Nice light historical treatment with a modern persons perspective.

The first 3 books of the Conrad Stargard series, combined. It's a light hearted romp through the middle ages. Leo Frankowski is a good writer who does a great job of telling a story. he does some times get side tracked, and the oft used first person narrative in the form of diaries seems almost amateurish at times, it's still a good time travel plot, and story. If you like alternate history, and time travel you'll love this book. If you insist on Hard SF, you'll still enjoy it, but not as much. One of my favorite series. Thomas Chism

Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court done by an engineer and done right, essentially. The engineering is solid. My only complaint would be that things generally go a bit too weel for our hero. Conrad makes some mistakes and missteps, but a few lucky incidents and a dollop of futuristic deus ex machina ensures that he always eventually succeeds.

As for the comment above regarding statuatory rape, yes, the book does contain what we would consider underage sex today, but it was a time when people didn't really have a childhood. Once you were born, you worked until you died and children were essentially little adults.

Alternate history of Poland. Confusing and too optimistic by half, but some good twists.
